The Bernina route between the Engadin region of Switzerland and Tirano in Italy is one of Europe’s great mountain rail journeys. Trains climb past glaciers, lakes and high Alpine scenery before descending toward Italian valleys. The branded panoramic service is famous, but regular regional trains use much of the same line and can provide more flexibility. Weather changes the experience dramatically, so clear conditions are a bonus rather than something you can guarantee.
2. Glacier-region routes through Switzerland
Switzerland’s east-west mountain rail corridors offer long days of valleys, viaducts and high passes. The Glacier Express is the best-known product, but travelers should distinguish the premium branded journey from the wider railway network. If you prefer to stop overnight or avoid committing to a full-day seat reservation, regional services can reproduce sections of the scenery at a slower, more flexible pace.
3. West Highland Line, Scotland
The route from Glasgow toward Fort William and Mallaig crosses moorland, lochs and remote Highland scenery before reaching the west coast. It is spectacular in unsettled weather as well as sunshine, which is useful in Scotland. Some visitors focus on the Glenfinnan Viaduct, but the entire journey is the attraction. Sit by a window, travel in daylight and avoid scheduling a tight onward connection after a long scenic run.
4. Oslo to Bergen, Norway
Norway’s main rail link between Oslo and Bergen climbs onto the Hardangervidda plateau and passes lakes, snowfields and high-country landscapes before descending toward western Norway. It works as transport between two major destinations rather than a tourist train that returns to its starting point. That makes it especially efficient in a larger Norway itinerary. Winter creates a very different journey from summer, with short daylight hours but dramatic snow.
5. Flåm Railway, Norway
The branch line between Myrdal and Flåm drops steeply toward the Aurlandsfjord through waterfalls and mountain scenery. It is short, heavily visited and often combined with fjord transport. The trip can feel packaged during busy periods, but the engineering and scenery remain impressive. If you are already traveling between Oslo and Bergen, it can be incorporated as part of a broader rail-and-fjord route rather than treated as a standalone excursion.
6. Rhine Valley, Germany
The railway along the Middle Rhine is less dramatic in altitude but excellent for travelers who like cultural landscapes. Trains follow the river past vineyards, villages, castles and steep valley sides. It is an easy route to include between Cologne, Koblenz, Mainz and Frankfurt-area travel. Daylight matters, and a slower regional service can be preferable to a high-speed train if your purpose is the view rather than the fastest journey.
7. Semmering Railway, Austria
The historic Semmering route links eastern Austria with mountain scenery through viaducts, tunnels and forested slopes. It is not as relentlessly panoramic as the Bernina line, but it is elegant, accessible and easy to combine with Vienna or Graz. Because it is part of a working rail corridor, the attraction is precisely that you can experience notable railway engineering without booking a special tourist product.
8. Plan the scenery, not just the ticket
For any scenic rail trip, check whether the route is in daylight, whether reservations are compulsory, and which side of the train is likely to offer the best views—while remembering that trains can reverse direction. Leave room for weather and engineering works. A beautiful railway journey is most satisfying when it replaces transport you needed anyway instead of forcing a complicated detour purely for a photograph.
