Citizenship by Investment Source-of-Wealth Checks

Source of wealth answers a broader question than source of funds: how did the applicant build the assets they own over time? A CBI reviewer may understand the immediate US$250,000 transfer yet still ask how a person on a modest declared income accumulated several million dollars. The strongest file connects major stages of wealth creation to primary records instead of presenting a single unexplained bank balance.

1. Salary wealth needs a career timeline

Long-term employees can document wealth with employment contracts, tax returns, payslips, bonus records and investment statements. The numbers do not need to reconstruct every household expense, but they should make the accumulated savings plausible. A sudden jump in assets should have a documented event behind it.

2. Business owners need to separate company and personal wealth

Corporate revenue is not automatically the shareholder's personal income. Show ownership, audited or reliable financial statements, dividends, salary, sale proceeds or other lawful distributions that moved value from the business to the applicant. If the company funded the CBI payment directly, explain the legal basis for that transfer.

3. Property gains require the acquisition side as well as the sale

A recent property sale can explain the cash used for CBI, but reviewers may also ask how the property was originally acquired. Keep the historical purchase contract, mortgage or payment evidence, title records, sale agreement and bank receipt. That chain converts a large one-time credit into an understandable wealth event.

4. Investment portfolios should show continuity

Brokerage statements, fund statements and tax records can establish how securities or digital assets grew over time. For large crypto-derived wealth, transaction history, exchange records and evidence of the original acquisition can be especially important. A screenshot of a current balance rarely explains beneficial ownership or provenance.

5. Inheritance and gifts need the donor or estate story

An inheritance can be a legitimate source of wealth even though the applicant did not earn the money personally. Provide probate documents, wills, estate accounts or transfer records. For a large gift, reviewers may also need evidence showing how the donor obtained the gifted assets.

6. Mixed wealth should be presented as components

Many applicants built wealth from several sources: salary first, then a business, then property and investments. Do not force that history into a single label. A simple table with dates, asset values and supporting documents can make a complicated financial life easier to review.

7. Tax records should broadly fit the wealth narrative

Differences between accounting income, capital gains and net worth are normal, but unexplained inconsistencies attract questions. Where a jurisdiction does not tax a particular gain or has limited filing requirements, provide the legal or accounting context instead of leaving reviewers to infer why the transaction is absent from a return.

8. Build the story before choosing the payment account

Source-of-wealth preparation should happen before the CBI transfer. Once the narrative is clear, choose a sending account that preserves the evidence trail. Moving funds through several new accounts immediately before payment can turn a well-documented fortune into a difficult source-of-funds investigation.

9. Use a reconciliation table for complex wealth

For applicants with several wealth sources, a one-page reconciliation can make the file much easier to audit. List each major source—salary savings, company dividends, property proceeds, portfolio gains or inheritance—the approximate amount it contributed to present net worth, the supporting documents and the account where the money now sits. The figures do not need false precision, but they should broadly reconcile with tax and banking records. This exposes double counting, such as treating the same property sale once as real-estate wealth and again as investment-portfolio wealth after the proceeds were reinvested. A reviewer should be able to understand the path from economic activity to today's assets without guessing.
