Shenzhen University is a large comprehensive institution with international undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. Southern University of Science and Technology focuses strongly on science, engineering and research. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen operates a distinct cross-border academic model, while Harbin Institute of Technology has a major Shenzhen campus.
Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School adds a large graduate-level research presence, particularly in engineering, data, environment, materials and other interdisciplinary fields.
2. International admissions are program-specific
There is no single Shenzhen application process. Each university publishes its own eligibility rules, academic prerequisites, language requirements, deadlines and document lists.
For example, Shenzhen University publishes separate annual brochures for international bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral applicants. Tsinghua SIGS publishes its own international graduate catalog and program requirements. Always use the current-year admissions page rather than an old third-party summary.
3. English-taught does not mean every program is in English
Some Shenzhen programs are taught in English or are designed for international cohorts, while others require Chinese or use both languages. The exact language requirement depends on the degree and department.
Do not assume that a university is “English-medium” simply because it accepts international students. Check the language of instruction for the specific program and the required IELTS, TOEFL, HSK or other evidence where applicable.
4. Student immigration paperwork matters
International degree students normally need the appropriate study visa and, for longer programs, residence procedures after arrival. Universities provide admission documents, but the student remains responsible for completing immigration steps correctly and on time.
Use the current instructions from the university and Chinese immigration authorities rather than relying on a generic visa paragraph because requirements can differ by program length, nationality and status.
5. Shenzhen’s academic advantage is proximity to industry
The city’s strongest differentiator is the density of technology, advanced manufacturing, telecommunications, software, electric vehicles and research activity around it. That creates opportunities for industry-linked research, guest lectures, projects and internships, but availability varies by institution and program.
Do not choose a degree solely because large companies are headquartered nearby. Ask how the department actually connects students with employers and whether internships are permitted under your student status.
6. Campus location changes daily life
Shenzhen is geographically large. Universities and graduate schools are spread across districts such as Nanshan, Longgang and other parts of the city, so two students can have very different commutes and lifestyles while both technically live in Shenzhen.
Before accepting an offer, map the campus, housing options, metro connections and likely internship locations. A prestigious program can become exhausting if daily transport has been ignored.
7. Scholarships exist, but rules change by intake
Universities may offer Chinese Government Scholarships, local or university awards and program-specific funding. Eligibility, coverage and application timing can change each year.
Treat scholarships as a separate application problem: verify whether an award covers tuition only or also accommodation, insurance and living expenses, and whether a separate application is required.
8. Student life extends beyond the campus
Shenzhen offers a very modern urban environment with extensive metro coverage, parks, coastal areas, shopping districts and easy access to the wider Greater Bay Area. For international students, the city can feel more contemporary and less historically layered than Beijing, Nanjing or Xi’an.
That character suits some students very well, especially those drawn to technology and entrepreneurship. Others may prefer a more traditional university city, so visiting or researching the campus environment matters.
9. Verify the current admissions year carefully
Admissions pages are updated annually, and old deadlines can remain indexed in search engines. Always check that the brochure you are reading matches your intended intake year.
If an application page gives conflicting dates, contact the university’s international admissions office before paying fees or making travel plans.
