Athens can anchor a history-focused visit, while Crete is large enough for a full trip of its own. The Cyclades, Dodecanese, Ionian Islands and other groups have different ferry networks and travel rhythms.
A route that looks simple on a map may involve indirect ferry connections or seasonal schedules. Build the itinerary around actual transport links.
2. Athens deserves more than the Acropolis
The Acropolis and its museum are central to a first visit, but neighborhoods, markets, archaeological sites and contemporary Athens add context that a short stopover misses.
Summer heat can make exposed archaeological sites uncomfortable in the middle of the day. Early starts and flexible afternoons are often more practical.
