The Freedom Passport is an accelerated citizenship programme, not a conventional golden visa
El Salvador's programme is branded around the Freedom Passport and is structurally different from classic Caribbean CBI. The official government portal describes a fast-track path to Salvadoran citizenship for a limited number of approved applicants, with screening followed by a large non-refundable contribution.
The contribution remains US$1 million for the family structure described by the official portal. The process begins with a US$999 application payment in Bitcoin or USDT; if approved, the applicant pays the remaining US$999,001 through the programme channel. Additional family administration charges can apply.
The official portal states that the Freedom Passport programme is limited to 1,000 participants per year. Capacity therefore matters in a way it does not in many long-established CBI programmes. An applicant should confirm that the intake remains open before arranging the main contribution.
There is no property asset behind the US$1 million payment
The contribution is not a house, hotel share, bond or bank deposit. It is a permanent programme cost paid in the permitted cryptoassets. An applicant should therefore compare it with other non-refundable contribution routes rather than with asset-based programmes where capital may later be recovered.
The large contribution means the case is less sensitive to project quality or resale risk, but payment logistics and source-of-funds evidence become particularly important. The authorities still need to understand how the applicant acquired the wealth and how the crypto or funds used for the programme were sourced.
Fast-track branding does not remove due diligence
The official process starts with registration and evaluation. Applicants are screened before the main contribution is completed. Criminal history, sanctions exposure, identity and financial capacity can therefore affect eligibility independently of the ability to pay US$1 million.
Anyone funding the contribution through a business, asset sale or crypto holdings should build a conventional evidentiary chain. Exchange records, wallet history, bank documents and tax or corporate evidence may all be relevant to showing lawful origin.
Naturalisation and passport issuance are still legal procedures
After approval and payment, the naturalisation process begins and the passport follows once citizenship has been authorized. The programme is marketed as fast, but applicants should treat any quoted timeline as indicative rather than guaranteed.
The Freedom Passport also should not be confused with ordinary residence or tax planning. Acquiring citizenship does not itself determine where the applicant is tax resident or where the family will actually live.
Family eligibility and the official portal should be checked immediately before filing
The official programme describes inclusion of a spouse and children under 18 within the family structure, with additional administrative payments for family members. Applicants with adult children, parents or more complex family arrangements should not assume Caribbean dependant rules apply.
Because the programme is comparatively new and capped, verify current availability, the official government portal, payment instructions and the exact naturalisation sequence before sending any funds. The US$1 million figure is simple; the legal process around it still deserves careful review.
