1. Check whether the programme has a specific post-citizenship procedure
Some CBI regulations expressly allow an original main applicant to apply later for a spouse who was not part of the initial filing. The fees and forms can differ from including a spouse at the start. Other jurisdictions rely more heavily on general nationality law after naturalisation.
2. A new marriage will be scrutinised on its own facts
Expect a marriage certificate and evidence that the relationship is genuine, particularly where the wedding occurs shortly after the investor receives citizenship. The government needs to distinguish a normal later marriage from an arrangement created to transfer nationality to another person.
3. The spouse undergoes separate background checks
The original investor's previous approval does not clear a new spouse. Criminal history, sanctions, identity, residence and other due-diligence matters can be reviewed afresh. Some programmes may also re-screen the original applicant when a post-citizenship family application is made.
4. Additional investment or government contributions may apply
Post-approval family additions can be priced differently from an original family package. A spouse added later may attract a set government contribution plus processing, due-diligence and interview charges. Compare those costs before deciding to file alone when marriage is already planned.
5. Marriage itself can change the original applicant's records
The citizen may change surname, address or family status and need to update passport or civil-registration records. Keep those administrative changes consistent with the spouse application so different authorities are not receiving contradictory information.
6. A spouse may have an ordinary naturalisation route instead
Depending on the country, marriage to a citizen can create a residence or naturalisation path outside the investment programme. That path may take longer but cost less. Compare the legal status, residence obligation and timing rather than assuming the CBI add-on is automatically preferable.
7. Divorce soon after addition can attract questions but is not automatically fraud
Relationships can genuinely fail. The important issue is whether the marriage and application were truthful when citizenship was sought. False relationship evidence can create revocation risk; an ordinary later divorce generally does not prove that the original marriage was a sham.
8. Plan family timing before the first application
If marriage is imminent, ask whether waiting and applying together is simpler and cheaper. If the relationship is uncertain or the spouse has a complex due-diligence profile, separate timing may be sensible. The right sequence depends on the programme's current family rules, not on a generic "add them later" promise.
9. Relationship evidence should match the timing of the marriage
A post-citizenship spouse application may attract questions about when the relationship began, especially if the marriage followed soon after the original CBI approval. That does not make the marriage improper; it means the chronology should be easy to prove. Civil records, shared residence, children, travel history or other ordinary evidence can help where the programme asks about genuineness. Avoid creating artificial evidence solely for the application. The strongest file normally shows the relationship as it actually developed and explains any unusual timing directly. If the couple lived in different countries for work or family reasons, document that fact rather than forcing the history into a conventional pattern that is not true.
