Search broadly before choosing the destination
If the goal is warm weather, skiing or a city break rather than one specific place, compare several destinations at once. Peak dates do not affect every route equally. An expensive flight to the obvious resort may sit beside a reasonably priced route to a less fashionable alternative with similar weather or activities.
Also compare trip lengths. Seven nights from Saturday to Saturday can be the most competitive pattern, while six or eight nights shift one flight onto a quieter day.
Test nearby departure airports carefully
A second airport can save a family a large amount on airfare, but only after parking, fuel, train tickets or an overnight hotel are included. A cheap 06:00 departure two hours from home may not be cheap in practice.
For international trips, compare baggage and seat-selection fees at the same time. Four low-cost fares can accumulate extras quickly.
Family accommodation is often the scarce item
Rooms that sleep four or five are fewer than standard doubles and can disappear early in school-holiday periods. If the accommodation is refundable, booking a good option before every detail is settled can provide useful protection while flights are compared.
Apartments, holiday parks and aparthotels may offer better value than two conventional hotel rooms, particularly for longer stays where a kitchen and laundry reduce other costs.
Use loyalty points where cash prices are genuinely high
Peak periods can be a strong use of airline miles or hotel points when award pricing has not risen as sharply as cash rates. But compare the taxes, cancellation terms and value of the points rather than spending them automatically.
Finally, watch the total holiday cost. Expensive airport meals, premium transfers and daily attraction tickets can erase a flight saving. During school holidays, the best value often comes from simplifying one part of the trip rather than trying to beat peak demand at every step.
