Plan laundry before clothes
For trips longer than a few days, access to a washing machine, hotel laundry or a nearby laundromat can reduce clothing volume dramatically. Once you know when clothes can be washed, pack enough to reach that point with a sensible margin rather than enough for every day of the holiday.
Choose clothing that combines easily and can be layered. A child does not need a separate complete outfit for every possible weather condition if a few pieces work together.
Limit the bulky categories first
Shoes consume space quickly and are often the easiest place to cut. Most family trips need a comfortable everyday pair and perhaps one genuinely different option for beach, formal wear or hiking. “Maybe” shoes often return home unworn.
The same applies to full-size toiletries and consumables. Diapers, wipes and basic shampoo can usually be bought at the destination, although parents of babies with specific skin or feeding needs may reasonably bring a known product.
Share equipment where sharing makes sense
Families rarely need multiple chargers for every device, several bottles of the same sunscreen or individual first-aid kits. Create shared categories and assign them to one bag. Older children can carry a small backpack with their own entertainment and layer, but the load should be realistic enough that an adult will not end up carrying it after an hour.
For baby equipment, ask what the accommodation supplies before packing a travel cot, high chair or bath item. Rental companies can sometimes provide strollers or other large gear at the destination.
Leave spare capacity on purpose
A suitcase that closes only when perfectly arranged is difficult to repack in a small hotel room and leaves no room for wet clothes, food bought for a train ride or anything acquired during the trip. A little empty space is practical, not wasted.
Keep travel-day essentials separate from the main luggage. Light packing is successful when the family can move through an airport or station with less effort while still having what it genuinely needs, not when the luggage reaches an arbitrary minimalist target.
