Choose the compartment, not just the train
Seated coaches, couchettes and sleeping cars offer very different levels of privacy and comfort. Families with younger children often value a private compartment because bags can stay together and bedtime does not depend on strangers coming and going. Some operators allow an entire compartment to be reserved; others sell berths individually.
Check whether children may share a berth, whether upper berths have suitable guards, and how many passengers the compartment is legally designed to hold.
Departure and arrival times determine whether the night works
A train leaving at 23:45 may require keeping a tired child awake in a station for hours. One arriving at 05:30 can eliminate the hotel night but create a new problem if the next accommodation will not store luggage or allow early access.
The ideal family sleeper often has enough evening time to settle aboard and arrives late enough for breakfast and normal city transport to be running.
Make one small bag the bedroom
Keep pajamas, toothbrushes, medicines, water and comfort items together so no one has to open large luggage in a narrow compartment after lights out. Valuables and documents should stay secured with the family rather than in unattended bags.
Bathrooms vary from simple shared facilities to private en-suite cabins on premium services. Children who are used to getting up at night may need an adult to accompany them through moving corridors.
Expect sleep to be imperfect
Trains stop, couple, brake and make announcements. Some children sleep through everything; others wake repeatedly. The value may still be worthwhile because the family is covering distance at the same time, but do not schedule the most demanding sightseeing morning immediately after arrival.
Compare the daytime alternative too. A fast daytime train plus a normal hotel bed can sometimes cost less and produce a better-rested family. Night rail is at its best when the route, compartment and timetable all solve a real travel problem rather than when it is chosen solely for novelty.
