1. Give Nairobi at least a little time
Nairobi National Park, museums, food and cultural attractions make the capital worth a day or two. Traffic is substantial, so group activities geographically and choose accommodation according to the next departure. A city stay also creates a useful buffer after a long international flight.
2. The Maasai Mara is famous but not the only safari
The Mara offers exceptional wildlife density and links ecologically with Tanzania’s Serengeti. Seasonal migration activity attracts crowds and raises prices. Outside headline periods the reserve can still be excellent, and private conservancies around it often offer different vehicle-density and activity rules.
3. Amboseli is about landscapes as well as elephants
Amboseli is known for elephants and views toward Kilimanjaro when cloud permits. It combines well with Nairobi and can form part of a southern circuit. Do not expect the mountain to remain visible all day; early morning often gives better conditions.
4. Laikipia and northern reserves offer another style
Conservancies in Laikipia and reserves such as Samburu can provide distinctive wildlife, landscapes and community-linked conservation models. They are valuable for repeat visitors or travelers who want to move beyond the standard Mara itinerary. Transfers may involve small aircraft or long drives.
5. Safari pricing is more than the room rate
Park fees, conservancy fees, vehicle use, internal flights, transfers and full-board arrangements can all affect the true cost. Compare packages line by line. A lodge that appears expensive may include game drives, while a cheaper room can require substantial extras.
6. The coast has both history and beaches
Mombasa and Lamu reveal Swahili history, while Diani and other beach areas offer easier resort stays. Lamu has a very different pace and transport pattern from a conventional beach hotel. Review current regional travel advice before choosing remote coastal routes.
7. Health preparation is destination-specific
Malaria risk, vaccination recommendations and yellow-fever documentation can depend on itinerary and arrival history. Consult an appropriate travel-health professional and current official guidance in advance. Safari dust, sun and dehydration are more immediate daily issues many visitors underestimate.
8. Ten to fourteen days creates a balanced first trip
A practical route can combine Nairobi, one or two safari areas and several coast nights. With less time, flying between safari and beach can preserve holiday days but increases cost. Avoid collecting parks simply by name; several nights in one ecosystem usually produces a better wildlife experience.
9. Choose safari season for priorities, not one “best” month
Wildlife is present year-round, but rain, vegetation, migration patterns and prices change. Dry periods can make animals easier to see around water, while greener seasons offer landscapes, young animals and fewer vehicles. Discuss your priorities with operators rather than booking one famous month simply because it appears on every generic safari calendar.
10. Internal flights have lighter baggage rules
Small aircraft serving safari airstrips commonly impose stricter luggage weight and bag-shape limits than international flights. Soft-sided bags are often preferred. Confirm the specific operator’s current allowance before packing; storing excess luggage in Nairobi can be easier than arriving at a light-aircraft check-in with a rigid suitcase that cannot travel.
