Eligibility is based on residence
Interrail is generally for residents of European countries covered by the scheme. Travelers who live outside Europe normally use Eurail instead. Proof of residence can be relevant during purchase or inspection, so use the product that matches where you actually live; nationality alone is not decisive.
Global Passes cover multi-country travel
A Global Pass gives access to participating railways across many European countries. One Country Passes focus on a single national network. The Global option is useful for itineraries such as France–Switzerland–Italy or Germany–Austria–Czechia, while a country pass may suit a deeper trip within Italy or another participating destination.
Travel days define flexible passes
A flexible pass allows rail travel on a set number of days during a wider period. On each activated travel day, multiple covered trains can usually be taken. Travelers staying three nights in each city can therefore conserve travel days. Continuous passes remove that calculation and are better for very frequent movement.
Home-country travel is limited
Interrail is not intended to replace normal domestic tickets where you live. The Global Pass currently allows limited journeys in the country of residence for leaving and returning as part of the trip. A traveler planning extensive domestic touring should check whether local railcards, national passes or regular tickets provide better coverage.
Reservations are not included automatically
Many regional services require no reservation, but major high-speed trains and night trains often do. The 2026 Interrail pass guide lists services such as TGV, Lyria, Freccia, AVE, Eurostar and sleeping accommodation among those where advance reservations can be required. These reservation fees sit on top of the pass price.
Reservation availability can shape the route
A pass gives network access, but it does not guarantee a seat on every departure. Popular Eurostar or summer TGV services can become constrained. If one route is essential, reserve it early and keep the flexible parts of the trip around it. This avoids owning a pass but being unable to use the exact train you expected.
The app is part of the workflow
Travelers typically manage a mobile pass by adding journeys and activating travel days before boarding. Check the journey is correctly recorded and carry the ID linked to the pass. Battery management becomes a practical travel issue, so a power bank is useful on long days with multiple connections.
Who gets the most value
Interrail is excellent for multi-country travelers, students or adults who value flexibility and plan several long rail days. It can be less compelling for a fixed two-city trip booked far ahead. Price the major journeys separately, then compare the pass plus reservations before deciding.
Inbound and outbound days need planning
Interrail’s limited home-country use can matter on the first and final day. If the traveler takes several domestic trains before reaching the international border, confirm how those journeys fit the pass rules. Otherwise a separate domestic ticket may be required even though the broader trip uses Interrail.
