Use a short landing stay to learn the market
A few hotel or serviced-apartment nights create time to see properties without pressure. That is especially valuable in cities where listings move quickly or where neighborhoods feel very different from their online descriptions.
The temporary stay is not wasted money if it prevents a bad month-long lease. It also gives time to obtain a local SIM, learn transport and understand normal utility arrangements.
Verify the listing, landlord and payment path
Photos and video tours can hide noise, poor light, weak furniture and construction nearby. Ask for a live video call or inspect in person where possible, and confirm that the person collecting money is actually authorized to rent the property.
Do not send large deposits merely because the landlord claims another tenant is waiting. A secure platform, written lease or verifiable local agent provides more protection than urgency.
Noise and building conditions should be checked in ways that listings rarely support. Visit at night if possible, look for construction nearby, listen for traffic and ask whether adjacent units are short-term rentals. A quiet viewing at midday can hide a bar downstairs or renovation beginning every morning at eight. For remote workers, these are work-environment issues, not merely lifestyle preferences. A slightly less central property can be a better choice if it produces predictable sleep and calls.
Internet needs evidence, not a promise
'Fast Wi-Fi' is too vague for paid work. Ask for a current speed-test screenshot from the unit, including upload speed and latency, and if possible test the connection yourself at the time of day you expect to work.
Also ask what happens when the main line fails. Mobile coverage at the apartment can be just as important as the router because it provides the simplest backup.
Read the practical terms of the lease
Utilities may be included, capped or billed separately. Air-conditioning, heating and electricity can turn a cheap monthly rent into a much higher total in extreme climates, so clarify exactly what is included before comparing properties.
Deposits should have written return conditions. Photograph the apartment at move-in and document existing damage so the final inspection does not become a debate based on memory.
Payment methods can reveal risk. Legitimate local landlords may reasonably request a bank transfer and deposit, but the documentation should match the person or company receiving the money. Be cautious when payment is redirected to an unrelated account or when the supposed owner refuses to provide a lease until after transfer. Keep copies of the advertisement, conversation, contract and payment receipt. Long-term housing fraud is much harder to solve from another country once the money has left the account.
Choose the neighborhood for weekdays
A district that is fun on Saturday can be inconvenient at 9 a.m. on a workday. Check noise, groceries, gym access, coworking, cafés and transport during ordinary hours.
Long stays are won by small conveniences. A slightly less fashionable apartment within walking distance of everything needed for daily life can produce a better month than a beautiful listing that requires a long journey for every task.
Furniture should be evaluated for work as well as living. A property may be fully furnished yet offer only a bar stool, low coffee table or decorative chair that becomes uncomfortable after several workdays. Ask for photos of the desk and chair, or confirm there is room to add a small temporary setup. For long stays, storage also matters: open suitcases and work equipment quickly make a small apartment feel chaotic. A slightly larger unit with a proper table and wardrobe can support both productivity and ordinary life much better than a more stylish but impractical rental.
