A hotel can reserve bays for guests, charge a fee or ask drivers to move after charging. These are private rules, not municipal benefits.
Enforcement can be camera-based
Parking systems may read the plate and compare it with a registered vehicle database. A foreign EV that is not registered can be charged like any other car.
Do not block charging spaces without charging
Even where enforcement is light, using an EV charging bay as ordinary parking prevents another driver from accessing energy.
Check the city, not the country
Parking incentives often vary between neighboring municipalities. The national EV policy tells you very little about the exact street where the car will be left.
Charging bays can have enforcement rules that change by time of day
A shopping center might allow free charging for two hours during opening times and apply normal parking fees overnight. A municipal charger may be restricted to residents after a certain hour. Read the signs at the bay every time; rules can differ from another charger in the same city. If the app shows an energy tariff but says nothing about parking, that silence does not mean parking is free. The car-park operator and charging operator can be different businesses with separate conditions.
Rental vehicles create a registration challenge
Some parking discounts require the number plate to be registered as zero-emission before the stay. With a rental, that plate may not be known until arrival. Ask the rental company whether local benefits are automatically recognized and whether the car has the required sticker or digital registration. If the process is complicated for a two-day visit, paying normal parking can be simpler than risking a fine. The purpose of an EV benefit is to save money or improve access, not to create administrative stress that outweighs the value.
Treat parking savings as optional, not as part of the core budget
A city can change its EV parking policy, limit it to residents or require registration that a visitor cannot complete easily with a rental. Build the trip assuming normal parking costs, then use any verified EV discount as a bonus. This avoids choosing accommodation based on a benefit that turns out not to apply. The same principle helps with charging bays: if the hotel has only one unit, do not assume the vehicle can occupy it all night without moving. Check both the charging rule and the parking rule. EV-friendly travel is easiest when incentives improve the experience but are not essential to making the itinerary affordable or workable.
