The driving licence is only the first document
A photograph or digital copy is rarely a reliable substitute for the physical licence when collecting a car. Check that it will remain valid for the entire rental and that the name matches your identification. Temporary licences and recently issued replacements can be treated differently, so unusual cases deserve advance confirmation. An International Driving Permit is generally a translation-style companion to a domestic licence, not a replacement for it. Whether it is legally required depends on the destination and licence format, while individual rental companies may impose their own conditions. Carry both documents when the permit is relevant.
Rental-car documentation is an eligibility checklist, not just identification. The branch needs to establish who the renter is, whether they may legally drive, and whether the payment method meets the contract. That is why a valid passport and driving licence can still be insufficient if the required payment card is missing or the name does not match the reservation.
Identity and payment cards are part of pickup eligibility
The desk needs to verify the identity of the person entering the contract, and foreign renters are commonly asked for a passport. In some regions another official identity card may be accepted. Use the same name across the booking, licence and payment card to reduce avoidable questions at pickup. Even a confirmed reservation may require a physical card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Accepted debit cards, virtual cards and mobile-wallet payments vary widely by supplier and location. Read the payment-method clause specifically; generic logos on a booking website do not settle the issue.
Keep the booking confirmation available offline
The reservation record proves the booked category, dates, rate and included features. Store a PDF or screenshot that can be opened without mobile data, especially after a late arrival. If the counter presents different terms, the original confirmation gives you a concrete document to compare rather than relying on memory.
Every additional driver needs their own valid documents
A spouse or friend who may drive should normally be added to the contract and should expect to present a valid licence. Allowing an unlisted person to drive can create serious insurance complications. Decide on drivers before pickup so everyone who needs approval is present with the required documents.
Unusual cases should be confirmed with the actual pickup location because national websites can simplify local practice. This is especially important for recently issued licences, temporary licences, additional drivers or international border plans. Keep written confirmation with the booking. A five-minute check before travel is easier than trying to persuade the counter staff after arrival.
Cross-border or unusual cases should be confirmed with the branch
Driving into another country may be permitted only for certain vehicle classes or after the rental company records the journey. Insurance documents or roadside-assistance arrangements may also change. If the itinerary crosses a frontier, obtain the applicable permission before departure rather than asking after the car has already left the station. Licences written in non-Latin scripts, young-driver rentals, temporary documents and residence-country mismatches can trigger additional requirements. The decisive rules are those applied at the actual rental location. A short written confirmation before travel is far more useful than discovering a local exception after a flight.
