Weekly rates dominate the market
Large yachts are generally marketed by the week even when shorter charters are possible. Price depends on size, age, builder, design, crew reputation, amenities, season and demand. Two yachts of similar length can have very different rates.
APA funds the variable trip
Fuel, food, drinks, berthing and many operating expenses are paid from an Advance Provisioning Allowance. Brokers often use roughly 20 to 40 percent of the base fee as a planning range depending on yacht and itinerary.
Taxes vary by destination
VAT or local charter tax can apply based on where the yacht embarks and cruises. The percentage and rules are jurisdiction-specific. Ask for a written estimate tied to the proposed route; figures from another country may not apply.
Fuel can dominate a fast itinerary
Moving a large motor yacht long distances at speed is expensive. Guests who spend more time at anchor and make shorter passages may use much less fuel than another group on the same vessel.
Berths can be expensive too
Prime summer ports and major events can command high marina fees. Large yachts also need suitable depth and berth length, reducing choices. A famous-port itinerary should budget for those stops specifically.
Compare all-in estimates
Ask the broker to show base rate, estimated APA, tax, delivery fees and gratuity guidance. That gives a realistic trip budget. Comparing only weekly rates can make a seemingly cheaper yacht look misleadingly affordable.
Repositioning can add a major charge
A yacht based in Greece may be willing to start a charter in Croatia, but getting there costs fuel, time and sometimes crew overtime. Owners may charge a delivery or redelivery fee when the requested ports fall outside the yacht’s normal cruising position. Ask before booking flights. A lower weekly rate can become less attractive if the yacht must travel hundreds of miles empty just to meet the guests.
Special requests can move the budget
Helicopter operations, large event berths, imported wines, extra security or specialist instructors can sit outside ordinary provisioning. The broker should identify unusual expenses as early as possible. Superyacht charters are highly customizable, but customization is not automatically included in the base fee. The cleanest budget starts with the intended lifestyle, not only the yacht rate.
Guest count does not always raise the base rate
Many yachts quote one weekly rate up to their certified guest limit and do not charge per person. A couple can therefore pay the same base rate as a family using all cabins. Food and some operating expenses will differ, but the yacht and crew cost remains largely fixed. As a result, groups sometimes see a much lower per-person figure when sharing. The important limit is certification: most charter superyachts carry no more than twelve guests under common commercial frameworks unless specially certified, even when they have more physical sleeping space.
A final note on cost to charter superyacht
For groups sharing the cost, agree in advance how APA top-ups and gratuity will be split. The yacht should not become the place where friends first discuss a six-figure budget.
