Start with how everyone will sleep
Look at the actual bed configuration and floor plan. A room advertised for four may contain two double beds, a sofa bed, a rollaway or a combination that works very differently once luggage and a cot are added. If separate sleeping space matters, confirm whether a suite has a real door between rooms or is simply a larger studio.
Connecting rooms can be excellent for families, but “adjoining” sometimes means only nearby. If an internal door is essential, ask whether it is guaranteed rather than merely requested.
The neighborhood is part of the hotel
A central hotel can save a family hours of transport over a short city break. Check the walking route to stations, restaurants and the places you expect to visit, not just the straight-line map distance. Steep hills, major roads and difficult crossings can make a seemingly close property inconvenient with a stroller.
Nearby supermarkets, pharmacies and ordinary parks are useful in ways that rarely appear in hotel rankings. They give the family options when restaurant plans fail or a child simply needs to run around.
Meal timing and small services have outsized value
Breakfast included in the rate can simplify mornings, but only if it starts at a useful time and has something the children will eat. Refrigerators, kettles, microwaves in a common area and the possibility of an early dinner may be more important than an elaborate restaurant menu.
For longer stays, laundry can be decisive. A guest laundry or reasonably priced service lets families pack less and recover from spills, beach days and wet weather without turning the bathroom into a drying room.
Check the safety details that photographs hide
Balcony rails, low windows, pool access and room doors deserve attention with younger children. Reviews from other families can reveal recurring problems, but read them selectively: one person’s complaint about a quiet residential location may be another family’s advantage.
If a kids club or babysitting service is important, treat it as a specific product. Check age bands, hours, supervision, booking requirements and extra charges. The best family hotel is the one whose ordinary systems work for the family even if the children never enter the club.
