Lujiazui is an efficient base for finance and many international offices. Jing’an or the central Puxi districts work better for a mixed schedule west of the river. Repeated crossings are easy by Metro but still consume time. Choose the hotel on the same side as most appointments whenever the client geography allows it. A Lujiazui property makes sense for a finance-heavy visit, while Jing’an can be practical for meetings spread across central Puxi. Check desk quality, early breakfast and reliable internet policies required by the employer. The room should make it easy to recover between meetings rather than forcing another long transfer.
Pudong and Hongqiao solve different airport and rail needs
Pudong handles most long-haul international flights, while Hongqiao sits much closer to many western districts and integrates with a major high-speed rail hub. Compare the arrival airport with the hotel and the next city on the itinerary. A slightly less convenient flight can create a far easier ground schedule. Pudong can require significant road or rail time from western districts. Confirm the route before accepting a late final meeting. Keep luggage ready and leave enough margin for traffic, station transfer and airport formalities. Shanghai rewards efficient planning, but the city is too large for a departure schedule that assumes every connection will be immediate.
Pudong and Puxi should not be treated as interchangeable sides of a compact city. If the first two days are concentrated in Lujiazui, staying in Pudong can save repeated river crossings; a Puxi-heavy schedule suggests the opposite. Hongqiao is particularly useful when regional rail is part of the trip. Exact tower information matters because large developments can add meaningful time after the traveler reaches the correct neighborhood.
Metro is predictable for many central movements
Shanghai’s Metro covers the main commercial districts and avoids road congestion. Cars and taxis are useful for industrial parks, client sites beyond the core or formal multi-stop schedules. Before accepting back-to-back times, check whether the second address is actually near a station or simply appears close to one on a simplified map.
Hongqiao is especially valuable when air and high-speed rail are both part of the itinerary. A traveler continuing to another Chinese city can sometimes avoid crossing Shanghai between transport hubs by planning the sequence carefully. For central meetings, Metro can be predictable, but large developments still require exact tower information. The strongest schedule separates the intercity movement from the office-building last mile.

Lujiazui and central commercial areas contain multiple towers, malls and podium entrances. Save the company name in Chinese where possible, along with floor and lobby. Arriving at the correct complex can still leave a long search for reception. A small arrival buffer is essential when the first visit is to an unfamiliar building.
Keep dinner on the same side of the river and use Hongqiao for regional rail efficiently
The Bund, Lujiazui and Jing’an each offer strong business dining. Choose the venue near the final meeting to avoid an unnecessary evening river crossing in traffic. A hotel restaurant can be a sensible choice after a long day if the group needs privacy, predictable service and minimal transport rather than a famous destination restaurant. High-speed rail from Hongqiao can connect Shanghai with other Chinese business centers. If the next city is by train, schedule the final Shanghai meeting in a location that does not require crossing from far eastern Pudong at the last minute. Station security and boarding time belong in the itinerary just like airport procedures.
