Sales phases, price tiers and transfer systems can change each year. Burning Man operates official ticket programmes and a secure exchange process; unofficial marked-up resale carries substantial risk.
A vehicle pass can be separate from the event ticket
Driving to Black Rock City may require a current vehicle pass in addition to admission. Do not assume one is automatically bundled.
Self-reliance is literal
Participants need enough water, food, shelter, clothing and medical essentials for the desert environment. This is not a campsite where forgotten basics can be easily purchased.
Dust affects everything
Fine alkaline playa dust enters tents, zippers, electronics and vehicles. Goggles, respiratory protection, sealed storage and clothing that covers skin during storms are practical equipment.
Heat and cold both matter
Daytime temperatures can be severe while nights become surprisingly cool. Shade, hydration, electrolytes and warm layers belong in the same packing plan.
Arrival and departure can take hours
Traffic is part of the event logistics. Do not schedule a tight flight connection immediately after leaving Black Rock City.
Leave No Trace extends beyond the campsite
Participants are responsible for packing out waste, including small debris and wastewater according to current rules. A camp should have a cleanup plan before it has a decoration plan.

Official preparation material is essential because entry procedures, prohibited items, safety information and environmental conditions can change. A short travel article cannot replace that source.
Vehicle and camp preparation should be tested before Nevada
Set up the shade structure, tent and sleeping system at home or another campsite before the trip. Test every pump, battery, light and fastener. A missing connector that is trivial in a garage can become a serious problem on the playa. Pack critical equipment in a sequence that allows camp setup before decorative items. Keep water, goggles and dust masks accessible during the drive in. If traveling with a group, assign responsibility for shared infrastructure and avoid assuming someone else packed it. Self-reliance is easier when preparation is specific, rehearsed and written down.
Protect essential documents from dust
Passports, vehicle papers and medical information should stay in sealed storage. The playa environment can damage paper and electronics more quickly than an ordinary campsite.
Treat preparation as part of the event
The final days before departure should be about testing the plan, not adding more gear. Check the current Survival Guide and entry information, confirm vehicle and camp arrangements, protect documents and electronics from dust, and make sure water, shade and waste plans still work if arrival or departure takes much longer than expected.
Once on the playa, self-reliance works best with margin: spare time, spare capacity and a plan that does not depend on mobile service. The event is easier when the camp can absorb heat, cold, dust and traffic without every inconvenience becoming an emergency.
