A shell lets the rider change warmth with separate mid layers and is versatile for variable weather. Insulated jackets simplify cold resort days and long lift rides but can become too warm during hiking, park laps or spring riding. Light insulation offers a middle ground. Consider how often you travel between climates and whether the jacket also needs to function as ordinary winter outerwear away from the mountain.
Waterproofing for sitting and falling in snow

A soft high collar protects the face from wind but should not press goggles upward. Try the full combination together because jacket hood geometry, helmet brim and goggle frame can interact in ways that are impossible to judge separately.
Pockets for passes, phone and gloves
A sleeve pass pocket speeds entry through electronic resort gates. Large internal drop pockets can hold gloves or goggles between runs, while a chest pocket may keep a phone warmer than an exposed hip pocket. Lower pockets should remain accessible while seated or wearing a backpack. More pockets add zippers and weight, so useful placement is more important than maximum number.
Durability and multi-season use
Snowboarding can be hard on cuffs, hem areas and fabric that repeatedly contacts boards or snow. Reinforcement in high-wear zones is worth considering for frequent riders. At the same time, an extremely heavy jacket may be unnecessary for occasional resort trips. Choose a fabric weight and feature set that match how often you ride, then maintain the garment by cleaning and renewing water repellency according to the care instructions.
