1. There are two common valet models
Official airport valet services usually operate from a dedicated terminal facility, while independent meet-and-greet companies collect the car at an agreed curb or short-stay area and move it to a remote compound. The second model can be cheaper, but it adds more reliance on the operator’s communication and storage standards.
2. The drop-off procedure should be explicit
A reputable booking provides a meeting point, arrival instructions and a number to call if you are early or late. At busy airports, stopping in the wrong lane can create fees or enforcement problems. Read the handover instructions before driving rather than trying to interpret them while circling the terminal.
3. Photograph the vehicle at handover
Take clear images of each side, the wheels, windscreen and dashboard mileage. This takes less than two minutes and creates a neutral record if a scratch, wheel mark or mileage dispute appears later. Keep the images until after collection and the final parking charge has been settled.
4. Ask where the car will be stored
“Valet” describes the handoff, not necessarily the parking location. The car may remain in a nearby garage or be driven several kilometers to a secure outdoor site. Confirm whether the facility is covered, fenced and staffed, and whether the vehicle may be moved during the stay.
5. Delayed flights test the service quality
Your return time can move by several hours. Good operators track flights or offer a clear process for updates so the car is not brought too early or left inaccessible after closing. Check late-night procedures and extra-day charges before choosing a product solely on the outbound convenience.
6. Key handling and insurance deserve attention
You will normally leave a working key with the provider. Remove house keys and personal tags that are not needed for parking. Review the operator’s liability terms for driving and storage, particularly if you have an expensive vehicle or unusual insurance conditions.
7. Convenience is strongest for certain trips
Valet parking can be disproportionately useful with small children, mobility limitations, ski equipment, multiple suitcases or a very early departure. A solo traveler with one bag and a long holiday may prefer the savings of a remote lot. Value depends on how much friction the terminal handoff actually removes.
8. Collection should be planned before landing
Save the return instructions and contact number offline. Some services require a call after baggage reclaim; others wait for a flight-tracking trigger. Knowing the process prevents a long wait at the curb and makes the premium worthwhile. The product is successful when the final handback is as smooth as the departure handoff. Keep the booking receipt until you have inspected the car, verified the final charge and left the airport.
