1. Short-stay parking prioritizes proximity
Terminal garages and pickup areas are usually closest to arrivals and departures, making them convenient for brief visits or very short trips. Their hourly or daily pricing can become expensive over a week. They are best when walking distance matters more than cost or when a late return makes shuttle dependence undesirable.
2. Long-stay lots trade time for a lower rate
Remote airport lots usually require a shuttle or internal train. Add that transfer to your arrival plan: a nominal 10-minute ride can involve waiting, luggage loading and several stops. For longer holidays the savings can be substantial, but only if the transfer schedule works with early and late flights.
3. Off-site operators can be competitive
Private parking companies near major airports may undercut official airport rates and offer frequent shuttles, covered parking or car-care extras. The trade-off is another company in the chain. Check reviews for shuttle reliability, vehicle security and what happens if a delayed flight brings you back after the advertised closing time.
4. Valet parking changes the handoff, not the need for trust
With valet service, you leave the car at a terminal or designated reception point and staff park it elsewhere. This saves shuttle time and can be useful with children or heavy bags. Photograph the car, record mileage if you care about it, and understand where the vehicle will actually be stored.
5. Pre-booking can matter at peak periods
School holidays, major events and long weekends can fill popular lots. Booking ahead can secure a space and sometimes a lower price, but cheap prepaid rates may be inflexible. Check whether the booking permits entry after a delay or departure one day later if your return flight is disrupted.
6. Vehicle height and charging needs can limit options
Roof boxes, vans and tall SUVs may not fit multi-storey garages. Electric-car drivers should verify whether charging spaces can be reserved or are simply available first come, first served. Do not plan to return to a full battery unless the product specifically includes charging rather than just access to a charger.
7. Security descriptions need interpretation
Fencing, lighting, cameras, patrols and controlled entry are useful, but no parking facility can promise zero risk. Remove valuables from sight and keep the parking ticket or booking record somewhere separate from the vehicle. Off-site providers that retain keys should explain why and how the car may be moved.
8. Compare the cost of parking with alternative airport transport
For a long trip, parking can exceed the price of two taxi rides or a train. For a family at a remote home address, the reverse may be true. Calculate the complete round-trip cost for your dates, then include convenience at the departure and return times before deciding to drive.
